“…the storm, now a Category 5…is headed directly for New York City…”
Breath of Life is a tense, claustrophobic, character-driven disaster drama that offers a profoundly moving meditation on the worst and best that humanity is capable of: ultimate selfishness, desperate tenacity, and undying tenderness that keeps people fighting for life in the face of utter devastation.
The film centers on the wrecked world of retired Army nurse Stella Novak; steely and irascible by nature and circumstance, she is a widow who long ago made the decision to hold the world emotionally at bay. Ironically, her quiet wish for solitude is horribly granted as a cataclysmic storm obliterates the Northeastern seaboard, making her one of the last few survivors anywhere.
Believing herself entirely alone now except for the orphaned dog who takes up permanent residence at her side, Stella contentedly spends her days sifting through the broken, wet landscape, searching for supplies and resources to begin a new life in her fractured wonderland. But as those days in the debris add up and she faces the overwhelming perils of a leveled New York City – starvation, disease, death, and desperate looters – she becomes stripped of her many emotional defenses and forced to answer for her past choices. It is only when she reluctantly rescues a young woman trapped and dying in the rubble that a new, unwavering certitude kicks in: If Stella is to save her own soul, she must keep the young woman alive and get her to safety at all costs.
